DECATUR -- While teachers are a vital part of any successful school system, behind the scenes are a group of dedicated personnel who play a pivotal role in ensuring that each student has a healthy, happy environment in which to learn.

The Decatur School District held a classified employee luncheon at Decatur Northside Elementary May 25 as a way of thanking those staff members who made 2015-16 a safe and successful school year.

Classified employees are non-teaching staff who support the school system. Secretaries, maintenance personnel, custodians and bus drivers help greet visitors, ensure buildings and grounds are maintained, keep classrooms and other facilities within the building clean and deliver students to and from school safely.

At the end of the luncheon, Jeff Gravette announced the classified employee of the year for 2015-16. This year's recipient was Jane McAdoo, who is the custodian at Decatur Northside Elementary. McAdoo is a 17-year veteran of the Decatur School District. Her commitment to excellence in her work, coupled with her passion for the students at Northside, earned her this award, Gravette said.
