— The Decatur Police Department is asking the public for help in apprehending the person or persons who passed a fake $100 bill to an area business on June 28.

The fake $100 bill was discovered by a Grand Savings Bank employee in the night deposit of the Decatur Dollar General store on South Main St. on June 29. Decatur police were notified around 9 a.m.

The United States Secret Service, the agency that handles all forgery cases, was also notified of the incident. Since the bill was clearly marked, “This is not legal tender,” the Secret Service turned the case over to local authorities.

The bill is clearly marked, “For Motion Picture Use Only,” in four places on the front and one place on the back. It was printed on heavy, glossy paper and not the paper usually used by the Treasury Department.

Decatur police are reviewing video surveillance footage from the store in an effort to identify the person or persons who passed the phony bill.

Area police departments are urging banks and businesses to be on the lookout for these (and similar) fake bills. If one is discovered, contact your local police department immediately.

Anyone with information pertaining to this case is asked to contact the Decatur Police Department at 479-752-3911.
