GRAVETTE--A sense of excitement filled the air in the Gravette Lions' field house as the Lady Lions took the court for the opening of the 2016-17 Gravette girls' basketball season. But that excitement quickly diminished as the Rogers Lady Mounties posted the victory and handed the Lady Lions their first loss of the season.

The opening minutes of the first quarter started slow. Neither team managed to get the ball into the basket. That changed when the Lady Mounties hit a 2 pointer to take an early lead. Rogers quickly gained momentum and began to build on those first two points. By the end of the half, Rogers had a 36-24 lead over Gravette.

The Lady Lions continued to have trouble on the boards and were unable to get the ball to drop into the bucket. By game's end, the Lady Mounties led, 69 to 47, and took home the victory.

The Lady Lions will travel south to take on the Greenland Pirates Nov. 29. Start time is 4 p.m. for junior high team, followed by the Lady Lions at 6 p.m.
