Soccer field gets go ahead for construction

— What started as a request by the Decatur Youth Soccer Program for a new place to play will soon become a reality, thanks to the efforts of Decatur Mayor Bob Tharp and the Decatur City Council.

The council awarded the construction contract to Hubco, owned and operated by Bobby Hubbard of Decatur, to build the new soccer complex at Veterans Park during the August 8 meeting.

Since it's conception last April, the soccer complex has seen several design changes and locations. The original site was just north of Charlie St. at Veterans Park. Then the complex was moved to Grant Springs Rd. near the city's Well Number 5. That location was scraped due to traffic flow problems near the Grant Springs Apartment complex. The soccer complex was moved back to the west side of Veterans Park near Edmiston Park baseball field.

Three bids were considered by the council during the August meeting. Hubco's submitted the lowest bid at $49,000.

Hubbard's contract will include earth work, materials for the complex, and a new parking lot to be constructed to the east of the complex.

The city received a $15,000 matching and $5,000 grants for the Veterans Park project. The city will research other sources of revenue, including addition grants to fund the remaining $14,000.

"The ability of the Decatur Youth Soccer program and the high school to play their matches here in Decatur is one step closer to coming true thanks to the city council," said Tharp. "In the end, this project will have a lasting impact on the Decatur economy."

The city plans to host a formal ground-breaking ceremony for the Decatur soccer complex at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 12 at the west end of Veterans Park near the Edmiston Park baseball field in Decatur. The public is invited to attend this ceremony.
