— For Meals on Wheels driver David Evans and his assistant, Paul Space, serving seniors in Gentry doesn't always end with delivering a hot meal to the door. One stop last week prompted them to break in the door and come to the aid of two meal recipients.

At one of approximately 20 stops on their route, the doors were locked and they could see the couple lying on the floor inside, head to head, Evans said. While the woman was unresponsive, the man called on them for help and even told Evans to break the safety chain lock on the door and come in to help him.

Evans said he pushed on the door and finally had to put his shoulder into it to get the door open.

Inside, he learned that the woman had fallen from her wheelchair during the night and the man was unable to get up from the floor when he came to his wife's aid. The two could only lie there, with the husband trying to comfort his wife until someone arrived to check on them.

Evans said he and Space called emergency responders and waited with the man and his wife until help arrived before continuing on their meal delivery route.

The family of the couple helped by the Meals on Wheels delivery team said it was so thankful for the Meals on Wheels program and for the actions of the delivery team which stepped up and went the extra mile to help in this emergency situation.
