GSAC offers meals for seniors, needs more to participate

GENTRY -- Hot meals are offered at noon each weekday at the Gentry Senior Activity and Wellness Center for area residents, age 60 and older. The suggested -- not mandatory -- donation per meal is $3, according to Jackie Bader, the Center's manager.

And, since a good portion of the Center's operating funds are based on the number of meals served, the Center could lose its operating funds if more people don't take advantage of the daily meal offerings.

According to Bader, she is doing all she can to invite and encourage area senior citizens to take advantage of the service and to enjoy the free fellowship and programs offered by the Center.

"The Gentry Senior Center is in need of help from the community," Bader said in a public announcement. "We would like to invite all seniors 60 and older to have lunch with us. Over the past few months, the number of people eating lunch at the center has declined, which puts the Center at risk. Our meals, which are a [suggested] donation of $3, are very nutritious and delicious. We also have many activities and trips scheduled for the coming months. Please plan on joining us."

Membership at the Center is free, Bader said. And the paperwork to sign up and enjoy all the benefits of the Center is minimal.

The Center offers meal delivery to area residents through its Meals on Wheels program. Also available are exercise programs, arts and crafts, a Bible study, table games and regular outings.

For more information on eating at the Center, Meals on Wheels, membership at the Center, activities at the Center or to sponsor meals for a senior, call Bader at 479-736-0378. The Center is located at 121 East Main Street in Gentry (next door to the Gentry Public Library).

The Gentry Senior Activity and Wellness Center receives support from the Office of Human Concern in Rogers and the Northwest Arkansas Area Agency on Aging in Harrison. Both are non-profit agencies which serve area residents.
