DECATUR -- In its first appearance in the 1A junior high district track meet, the Decatur Bulldog team made its presence known as it walked away with both the boys' and girls' championships.

Over the last 10 years, the Bulldogs have dominated the 2A junior high meet, bringing home six straight championships. The tradition carries on into the 1A as the boys earned their first title and their seventh straight victory in track. With 146.50 points, the Bulldogs overwhelmed the four other teams in the competition, Omaha, Northwest Arkansas Classical A, Alpena and Kingston. Omaha took second with 68.50 points.

Three of the top five individual high point leaders in the boys meet were from Decatur. Joseph Armstrong was the top points individual leader, with teammate Tafari James placing third and Joseph Cheng taking fifth place.

The Bulldog girls' team took its second straight meet, winning the 2A title last year and now the 1A title this year. Decatur finished 10 points ahead of second-place Western Grove and 23 points ahead of Kingston.

Destiny Meija took second place in the individual high-point scorers, beaten by five points by Alex Hill of Alpena. Farrah Armstrong and Bronwyn Barry tied for fifth place, while Ashley Herrera finished ninth among the top 10 finishers.

For Shane Holland, Decatur track coach, the entry into the 1A was a sweet ending to another successful season.

"It was a great meet for our kids," said Holland. "They did everything I asked of them and more. I was proud of all of them."
