SHREVEPORT (La.) -- The American Electric Power Foundation announced a $25,000 grant to the Teen Action and Support Center for support and expansion of the organization's teen volunteer program in Northwest Arkansas.
The Foundation is funded by American Electric Power and its utility operating units, including Southwestern Electric Power Company, which serves approximately 116,000 customers in Arkansas.
The grant will be used to support the center's In Service program, which provides opportunities for teens in Benton and Washington counties to provide service hours to area agencies and community partners.
"We are thankful for the generous support of the American Electric Power Foundation," said Madi Hutson, TASC executive director. "The students in our In Service program will research, plan and implement community impact projects. They learn both hard- and soft-life and job skills, and they are connected to caring adult mentors, both personally and professionally," Hutson said.
"We are excited to present this grant to the Teen Action and Support Center on behalf of the American Electric Power Foundation," said Jeff Milford, SWEPCO external affairs manager in Fayetteville. "Through the In Service program, teens learn about community service, and they gain skills that will help them in their education and careers. We're proud to support the organization and the positive impact it has on the community."
The Teen Action and Support Center is a local 501c3 non-profit organization which empowers teens to take action in their own lives and communities through community engagement programs, counseling and resource programs. The American Electric Power Foundation provides a permanent, ongoing resource for charitable initiatives involving higher-dollar values and multiyear commitments in the communities served by AEP and initiatives outside of AEP's 11-state service area.
The Foundation focuses on improving lives through education from early childhood through higher education in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math and the environment and by meeting basic needs for emergency shelter, affordable housing and the elimination of hunger. Other Foundation support may be offered to protect the environment, support healthcare and safety, and enrich lives through art, music and cultural heritage.
