CHEROKEE CITY — Harold Gene Ellis, 58, of Bernice, Okla., was killed Thursday when the truck he was driving overturned on Arkansas Highway 43 just south of the Spavinaw Creek Bridge and slid into the west ditch. Two others in another vehicle were injured in the crash.
According to a fatal crash summary issued by the Arkansas State Police, Ellis was northbound in a 2007 Freightliner and failed to negotiate a curve in the road, causing his truck and trailer to go left of center and overturn. A southbound 2017 Dodge Ram pickup truck with two occupants was struck by the tractor-trailer rig in the southbound lane, injuring both occupants.
The accident occurred at 10:19 a.m., according to the crash summary.
The names and the extent of the injuries of the two people in the southbound pickup truck have not yet been released by the ASP.
The location of the accident was on the curve between the Spavinaw Creek Bridge and the Coon Creek Bridge on Arkansas Highway 43.
Emergency responders at the accident included area police, the sheriff's department, state police and firefighters from Gentry, Maysville and other agencies.
