GRAVETTE -- PAWS award winners were honored at an assembly last week at Glenn Duffy Elementary School. PAWS Students of the Month for January are Bailey Cooper of Gravette, Evan Cowdrey of Bella Vista, Brilee Gilbert of Gravette, Colton Priebe of Gravette, Anthony Smart of Gravette and Gianna Smith of Bella Vista.

PAWS ("Pawsitive" and Wise Students) awards are given in the classroom, hallway and cafeteria as an incentive for students to practice the PAWS skill of the month. Students are recognized at monthly Rise and Shine assemblies. PAWS Students of the Month T-shirts are sponsored by the Glenn Duffy Elementary PTO.

The Glenn Duffy Elementary PAWS program incorporates character education and positive behavior into the school community. Each month PAWS skills are chosen and discussed in classroom guidance in relation to character education. Respect is the word for this month. Teachers were urged to talk to their children about how they might seek ways to be polite or considerate of others. As the Golden Rule says, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

School counselor Barbara Roberts talked to students about the character word, respect. She reminded students of the book she read, "How Full is Your Bucket?" and how students should try to be bucket fillers each and every day. She showed students the example of being a "bucket dipper" when you're not showing respect to someone. You're not only taking out of their bucket but your own as well. When you make a good choice and do show respect you're filling your own bucket as well as the other person's.

First grade teachers taught students about the social skill for the month, sharing. They told students that sharing involved these steps: 1) Decide what you want or have been asked to share, 2) look at the person who wants you to share, 3) ask if they would like to share or play with you and 4) make room for the person to join you or give them the thing you have decided to share.

Gravette Kiwanis Club members Nancy Jones and Malcolm Winters attended the assembly and presented bumper stickers to students recognized as Kiwanis Terrific Kids.
