"A Walk in the Park" kicks off Gravette summer reading program

GRAVETTE -- "A Walk in the Park," presented by the Gravette Public Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 24, will be the kickoff event for the library's annual summer reading program. The event will be held in Old Town Park at Gravette.

The event will feature a picture book walk of the book "Over In The Meadow" by Ezra Jack Keats and a related children's craft. Funding was provided by a $500 mini-grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation.

Summer reading clubs will be offered for children, teens and adults. "Build a Better Summer" for teens and "Good Reads for Grownups" for adults will begin June 26. "Build a Better World" for children starts July 11. Attendees will be given the opportunity to sign up for summer reading clubs for their age groups at the event or may register at the library, beginning June 26.

Registration will also be available for the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program for preschool children. This is an early childhood literacy program that encourages parents and caregivers to read 1,000 books to children, ages 0-5.

Officers from the Gravette Police Department will be on hand to provide each child an ID card and will help each one to place his thumbprint on the card. Smoke house fire safety instruction will be provided by members of the Gravette Fire Department. Children will be conducted on tours of the smoke house, a mobile fire safety education facility.

Members of the Old Town String Band will be providing music during the day, and a hamburger dinner fundraiser will be conducted by the Gravette library advisory board. Hamburger meals with a hamburger, chips and a drink will be available for $5 and all proceeds will benefit the Gravette Public Library.
