GENTRY -- "Help us BUILD A BETTER WORLD" was the theme at the summer reading program at Gentry Public Library which began on Monday and continues through July 24.

The program meets from 2-4 p.m. on Mondays (excluding July 3) for children going into kindergarten through the eighth grade.

There will be presentations, crafts, reading and lots of fun, according to library staff.

Scheduled presentations include beekeepers (but no live bees) to show how bees help our environment, the Gentry Police Department and the Gentry Fire Department to help us learn to be safe, and the Illinois River Watershed Partnership to show us how to conserve water and keep our rivers and streams clean, library staff said.

"Some of our activities will include building a honeybee home, making mock stained glass art based on building a better world, creating a weather journal, shadow drawing and silhouette drawing, a library release stated. "Of course, we will read books that have to do with all of these topics," the release said.

Children are invited to join in the summer reading fun at the library next Monday at 2 p.m.
