Man leads Decatur police on high-speed chase

DECATUR -- An Oklahoma man faces possible charges of aggravated assault and multiple counts of fleeing after leading police on a wild car chase which ended with the car's engine seizing up along Arkansas Highway 102 west of Decatur.

According to police reports, Decatur police officer Lance Dixon attempted to pull over a vehicle for a defective taillight near the Vista Buena Apartment complex on Grant Avenue in Decatur around 4 p.m. on June 21.

According to police, Gary Lee Pack (52) of Bunch, Okla., pulled into the apartment complex and let two passengers out of the vehicle at the Vista Buena Apartments and left at a high rate of speed. Pack headed eastbound on Grant when he spotted another Decatur police unit driven by Sgt. Ty Eggebrecht and K9 officer Koda heading west. Pack swerved in front of the oncoming police vehicle, forcing Eggebrecht into the ditch, according to police reports.

Pack allegedly ran the stop sign on Charlie Street and Grant Avenue and on Grant and Main Street before making a left turn onto Arkansas Highway 102. Pack then led the Decatur officers on a high-speed chase, reaching speeds of 80 miles per hours at one point.

The chase ended near the intersection of 102 and Tucker Road when the engine quit. Pack bailed from the car and ran 400 yards before Eggebrecht released K9 Officer Koda, who quickly apprehend Pack without further incident.

Pack was taken to the Benton County Jail, where he was booked in connection with one count of aggravated assault, one count of fleeing by vehicle, one count of fleeing on foot, one count of reckless driving and one count of driving on a suspended license.
