GENTRY -- The Gentry Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual fishing derby at the spring-fed pond in the Flint Creek Nature Park on Saturday afternoon with more than 25 children, accompanied by parents, grandparents and others, participating in the fishing contest.

The pond was well stocked prior to the contest and the outside temperatures were comfortable but the fishing was slow when the derby began. After some time, a few fish were caught by the young anglers, some fishing for their first time.

Winning the derby with his catch of a 21.5-inch catfish was Mitchell Turner. He and many other children took home prizes of fishing gear provided by the chamber and the derby's sponsors.

All in all, the derby was another success, with youngsters introduced to fishing and families spending time together enjoying one of America's favorite sports.
