SULPHUR SPRINGS -- Folks are expected to come streaming into the town of Sulphur Springs this Saturday, June 30, as the residents hold their annual Independence Day celebration in the city park. Visitors from throughout the area will enjoy the dozens of activities that make up the yearly event.

Activities will begin at 7 a.m. when cooks from the Sulphur Springs Events Committee will start serving a pancake breakfast in the park, and at 8 a.m. registration will begin for the annual free fishing derby. Trophies will be given in three age groups.

Several entries are expected in the annual car show, all vying for the attractive custom trophies presented to winners. Registrations will be accepted from 10 a.m. to noon at a fee of $10 per vehicle (car, truck or bike). Vehicle owners wishing to perform multiple burnouts following the show can do so by paying an additional $5. Judging will be held at 1 p.m., and awards will be presented at 2:30 p.m.

Vehicles will be featured in a few other events as well. A popular event which will be returning is car painting, where participants pay a small fee to spray paint designs on an old vehicle donated by Got Junk? When the car painting event is over, another opportunity to work on the vehicle will be offered when fees will be collected for the opportunity to bash the car with a giant sledgehammer. Another car, labeled the money car, will hold several hidden bills totaling $100 and participants will be allowed to climb through the vehicle hunting for the prize currency. Youngsters 17 and under will be charged $2, and those 18 and over will pay $3 for a three-minute search. Once they find a bill, they must end the hunt.

Youngsters will enjoy bouncing in a variety of jump houses and splashing on water slides which will be set up. A duck race in the afternoon will give some an opportunity to wade in the nearby creek. Those not wanting to get wet themselves may douse someone else in the dunk tank sponsored by the Sulphur Springs Fire Department. The parks department is also bringing back the greased pig race this year, and it will be held on the baseball field. Camel rides and pony rides by Partytime Ponies will be available.

Beauty pageants for various age groups will begin at 11 a.m., and musical entertainment will be offered by the Northwest Arkansas band, Rockhouse Road, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A street dance will be held in the evening following the fireworks.

Barbecue dinners will be available in the park, and folks may win their dessert by entering the cakewalk that is planned by the Friendly Neighbors Club. Vendors will be set up offering Oriental food, other food items and drinks. Other vendors will be selling craft items.

Fireworks will light up the sky when the annual fireworks display is held at dark.
