GRAVETTE -- "Pawsitive and Wise" Students of the Month at Glenn Duffy Elementary School were honored at the monthly Rise and Shine assembly May 7. Staff and guests celebrated as Glenn Duffy students were recognized for class and individual awards. PAWS grade-level award winners for May are Bella Allen, Ava Brown, Isaiah Cordeiro, Kaylee McCaslin, Kyngston Traxler and Kenji Vang. Many other Glenn Duffy Elementary students were recognized for classroom PAWS awards, Terrific Kids or Box Top awards.

The PAWS Program incorporates character education and positive behavior into the school community. Each month PAWS skills are chosen and discussed in classroom guidance in relation to character education. School staff always watches for opportunities to encourage students for excellent character, behavior or effort.

The character word for May is perseverance. This is defined as continuing with a job until it's done. Partners from Ozarks Community Hospital in Gravette led discussions about perseverance. Amanda Gittlein, OCH marketing manager, introduced Jessica Bolin, Gravette Clinic administrator; Ashley Stone, pediatric nurse practitioner, and Taylor Holland pediatric speech therapist. Together they mentioned that there are many obstacles in a child's life, learning to read, playing a new sport or even breaking a bone. Perseverance and determination will help you be successful in these life situations.

This month's social skill is sharing. Steps to practice this skill include:

• Decide what you want or have been asked to share;

• Look at the person who wants you to share;

• Ask if someone would like to share with you; and

• Make room for the person to join you and share with them.
