Gravette girls win in quarterfinals, beat out in semifinals

GRAVETTE -- The Lady Lions won in a Friday quarterfinal game against Lonoke but lost to Pottsville in the semifinals on Saturday, being down, 9-0, after five innings. The Lady Lions scored two runners in the sixth and another in the seventh but couldn't close the gap. The loss ended Gravette's hope of a state championship.

Gabbi Scott delivered on the bases and Bailey Elmore delivered in the circle as the Lady Lions earned a quarterfinals win Friday in the Class 4A state softball tournament in Nashville.

Scott was 2-for-2, scored two runs and stole five bases to spark the Lady Lions (23-6), who advanced to Saturday's semifinals.

Scott walked to open the bottom of the first inning, promptly stole second and third base and scored on Lexi Gerner's bunt single for a 1-0 lead, which was enough for the dominant Elmore who has been sensational in the post-season.

Over seven innings, Elmore allowed just four hits and struck out seven without allowing a walk. Elmore threw just 76 pitches with 58 for strikes.

Kira Harrel went 3 for 5, Skylar Campbell had 3 RBIs and Sadie Saul belted a home run during a six-run fifth inning for Pottsville (28-3), which got a chance to defend its state championship after blowing past Gravette in Saturday's semifinal game.

Pottsville was set to face Bauxite for the championship.

Campbell, Saul, Abbie Cain, Sophia Hampton and Sydney Flippo all had two hits apiece for the Lady Apaches, who jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back. Pottsville finished the game with 15 hits. Campbell also was the winning pitcher after allowing 3 runs on 7 hits while recording 4 strikeouts.

Gabbi Scott was 3 for 4 for Gravette (23-7). Bailey Elmore took the loss despite striking out nine.

Gravette scored two runs in the sixth inning on a passed ball. Scott scored in the seventh on a fielders' choice.
