GRAVETTE -- Richard Page, superintendent of Gravette public schools, was guest speaker for the meeting of the Gravette Lions Club May 15 at the Billy V. Hall Senior Activity Center. Page spoke to members and guests about the May 22 school election and the proposed millage increase. He displayed architects' plans and explained the facilities proposal, detailing the four projects for which the funds would be used.

Tail twister Cela Gaytan was absent, but club secretary-treasurer Jeff Davis conducted a short quiz on Lions Club acronyms, abbreviations of club officers and organizations on various levels of Lionism. Susan Holland and club president Bill Mattler were high scorers.

Mattler reported that construction on the foosball court at Pop Allum Park has been delayed while waiting for delivery of additional materials. Workdays are planned on Saturdays, beginning at 7 a.m., and a grand opening is planned during the city's Independence Day celebration on June 30.

Davis gave the financial report. He reported a negative balance in the activity account because of the need for additional materials for the foosball court but said the $400 payment from the Lions of Arkansas Foundation grant will be received when work on the court is complete.

Mattler announced that inauguration of new officers will be held at the June 19 meeting of the club. That date will mark the club's five-year anniversary and a special Charter Day celebration will be held.

He reminded members of the grand opening and open house at the Hiwasse park and community building Thursday, May 31. He urged everyone to attend and show their appreciation for the new meeting place.

Following the meeting, members went to the Gravette Subway sandwich shop where they presented a certificate of appreciation to general manager Melissa Alley and her employees. The certificate read, "The Gravette Lions Club would like to show their appreciation to Melissa Alley and the entire Subway crew for their hospitality, great service and willingness to accommodate our club meetings and for their contributions to our Mile of Pennies fundraising campaign." Club meetings were held at Subway for several months and employees regularly add their tips to the Mile of Pennies collection jar.
