Gentry eliminated from playoffs

GENTRY -- The Pioneers ended their season on the gridiron when they traveled to face the Bearcats in Mena on Friday in the first game of the state 4A football playoffs. The final score was Mena 31, Gentry 7.

Gentry scored in the first quarter when sophomore Zack Jarnagan carried one into the end zone for six points. Giovanny Ramirez put one between the uprights for the point after, but that was the end of Gentry's scoring for the night.

Mena matched Gentry in the first quarter and then added 10 points in the second quarter and seven each in the third and fourth quarters of the game for the victory.

The Pioneers finished the game with a negative 28 in rushing yards and a positive 139 yards through the air. With an additional 79 yards on kickoff returns and 3 yards on punt returns, the Pioneers finished the evening with 193 yards -- that compared to 417 total yards for the Bearcats.

Garrett Hays and Peyton Wright led the Pioneers in tackles. Hays had nine solos and six assists, including a sack. Wright had eight and six.

The Pioneers finished their season at 3-4 in conference play and 3-8 overall.
