DECATUR -- As the sun rose Saturday morning, revealing the makings of a beautiful morning, residents of Decatur awoke to the news that has so eluded them for nearly two years -- news, that the Decatur varsity football team finally broke a long losing streak with a big 56-36 victory in the eight-man football league.

The Bulldogs made the long five-hour, 330 mile trip to southern Arkansas to face the Hermitage Hermits in an eight-man league showdown at Hermitage. This was the second meeting between these two teams this season. On Aug. 31, the Hermits defeated the Bulldogs, 38-32, in the first eight-man football game of the newly-formed league.

Toby Conrad, Decatur High School principal and athletic director, was so ecstatic about the win that he sent out a photo and message through the school's email system.

"Tell your friends, let everybody know," Conrad wrote."Decatur High School celebrated its first win in two years against the Hermitage Hermits on the road. Thanks for all your support and a special thanks to Jeff Gravette for getting eight-man football started in the state of Arkansas."

The last victory for Decatur came Oct. 21, 2016, against Western Yell County when the Bulldogs posted an impressive 28-14 win during homecoming. This was the only win of 2016, the last year Decatur was in the 2A conference.

Now the Bulldogs turn their attention on another homecoming contest Oct. 12 when they square off against the Augusta Red Devils at Bulldog Stadium in Decatur. Game time is 7 p.m., with the crowning of the 2018 homecoming queen at 6:30 p.m.
